The Zest Café has been operating successfully in Abbey Road, just off Cheap Street, for 15 years providing a vital point of contact and support for those with or recovering from a mental illness. In the last few weeks the centre has learned that its funding is to be cut, with the result that it will have to close by the end of the summer. Astonishingly, I’ve been told that the County Council officials responsible for the cut have never visited the premises to see the good work they do, which includes work with the Food Bank, the Credit Union and the CAB.
This week, along with local councillors Robin Legg and Guy Patterson I met staff at the centre and am determined to get this short-sighted decision overturned. A relatively small amount of money is needed to keep the centre open – £50 a day would be enough.
