As a Liberal Democrat I believe in a fair, free and open society, in which we balance liberty, equality and community, and in which no one shall be enslaved by poverty, ignorance or conformity.
Balancing support for vulnerable people in our communities with developing aspiration and enabling people to get on in life is sometimes difficult in a constituency like West Dorset where prosperous market towns and areas of real innovation can hide pockets of poverty and where the fact that we are rural and have poor transport systems means that people can struggle to access services.
My key campaign areas echo our aim to build a Stronger Economy and a Fairer Society through:
- Building housing that is affordable for local people;
- Caring for those who are less able to help themselves whether affected by age, disability or low income;
- Supporting rural communities and the services they rely on;
- Encouraging businesses and vibrant high streets.
We can build a stronger society from the ground upwards, creating jobs and keeping money in the local economy with the services and opportunities that we need to support it.
But above all, West Dorset is about our communities , enabling the people who live in them to fulfil their vision and potential, to be resilient in protecting and sustaining our unique and outstanding natural environment and to have access to the right kinds of support when they need it.
