Save the 47 bus:
Recently a threat above and beyond the proposed cuts to bus services across Dorset emerged in the decision by First Buses to cut the number 47 route between Bridport, Beaminster, Broadwindsor, Mosterton, Crewkerne and Yeovil.
I made a strong representation to Dorset County Council’s cabinet that the council should be supporting transport routes connecting the main towns between which people need to travel for purposes of education or work.
Students from Bridport and Beaminster who go to Yeovil College use this route. Many of them choose Yeovil College because of its excellence in textiles, engineering, media and as well as traditional A level subjects, which are different areas of expertise from those offered at Weymouth College.
Denying them access to a college which offers the best choice of subjects for their career development would, I think, be very wrong, especially now that students are required to continue in education for longer.
Other people work in Yeovil and the commuter buses at the start and end of the day are really essential for those who use them. I’m glad Dorset and Somerset County Councils have decided to temporarily subsidise this bus – but I’m working with a new action group of number 47 bus service users to develop a petition and lobby the relevant bodies to continue this service beyond summer 2014.
